Sonos and Ikea Debut Partnership Results

Sonos and Ikea present the first products making the SYMFONISK wireless speaker range at Milan Design Week 2018-- a slimline bookshelf speaker and a speaker/table lamp combo, both compatible with the wider Sonos ecosystem.

SymfoniskDesigned to "democratise the home sound system," the SYMFONISK line represents another step in the Ikea move into smart home space. The bookshelf speaker is dubbed KUNGFORS, and is wall-mountable either vertically or horizontally via custom bracket. In addition, one can simply put it on a bookshelf. Users can pair two for stereo separation, and use them as home theatre surrounds with Sonos Beam, Playbar or Playbase.

Samsung Galaxy A80 Camera Slides AND Rotates!

The mid-range Samsung Galaxy A80 has an interesting solution to the notch issue-- a rear-facing camera able to slide upwards before automatically rotating to handle selfie duties, allowing use of an "Infinity" notchless display.

Galaxy A80The pop-up camera is technically a 3-camera array consisting of a main 48MP f/2.0 shooter, an ultra-wide 8MP f/2.2 camera and a Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor. The result, Samsung says, allows users to shoot vivid photos during both day and night, while the ToF sensor creates Life Focus videos by scanning objects for measurement and depth.

Powerbeats Get Pro Update

Apple follows the 2nd generation AirPods with an alternative set of wireless earbuds from the Beats stable-- the Powerbeats Pro, a wireless redesign of the fitness-oriented Powerbeats earbuds.

Powerbeats ProThe Powerbeats Pro promise an "ergonomically angled acoustic housing" able to fully seal the ears to ensure outside noises do not get in while allowing for a comfortable fit. The design, Apple says, is 23% smaller and 17% lighter to the previous generation Powerbeats 3 earbuds, and includes adjustable hooks holding the buds in place.

IDC: Smart Speakers Break Q4 Record in Europe

The European smart home market reaches nearly 33 million units in Q4 2018, IDC reports-- an increase of 15% Y-o-Y. Meanwhile full year 2018 shipments are up by 23% over 2017 to 88.8m, the highest volume yet.

"Last year, fierce competition between Amazon and Google reached a peak over the Black Friday and Christmas periods, with heavy sales promotions from both companies," the analyst says. "Moreover, Amazon launched its first Echo products in Italy and Spain, while Google expanded availability of its home products into 5 new countries in Western Europe. The Echo Dot was the top-selling item on Amazon.com on Black Friday, exceeding all expectations as it became out of stock in several markets. The adoption of smart speakers will continue to expand rapidly, as purchases are no longer driven by curiosity or impulse buying, but by the increasing presence of several speakers in the household."

Foxconn Chairman Steps Down

Terry Gou, founder of Taiwanese assembly giant Foxconn, announces plans to step down as chairman in order to "pave the way for younger talent to move up the company's ranks," Reuter reports.

Foxconn Terry GouFoxconn is nothing less than the largest contract manufacturer in the world, making a change in leadership a tricky situation at best. Making the situation arguably worse is a current attempt at cutting reliance on Apple, since currently the iPhone maker is looking to diversify its supplier base as smartphone sales plateau.
