Best Buy remodels 27 of its US stores as part of its latest store concept.

A runway greets customers as they enter the remodeled stores. It leads to the store's centre and  houses 3 kiosks, each with employees explaining mobile phone apps, Google TV and wireless router options.

There are also 5 interactive stations to demonstrate different technologies on, each tailored according to the store's demographic (from mobile technology to home automation).

Employees have wireless POS devices  to search product information and check out customers.

Large touchscreens throughout the stores allow customers to search and do side-by-side product comparisons.

Customers can also make use of Geek Squad private consultation booths.

Hasbro Brings 3-D on iPod

American toy maker reveals a handheld device called My3D that attaches to iPod or iPhone to delivers 3D apps for gaming, virtual travel experiences and entertainment content. My3D targets adults as well as Hasbro kids.

Hasbro My3DLike binoculars with a slot for inserting iPod or iPhone, My3D sells in USA for  $30. Hasbro will sign up stores where Apple's iPhones and iPod touches are available.

Hasbro has signed up DreamWorks Animation to develop material and will draw on content from a still-to-be-named 3D TV network joint venture of Sony, Discovery and Imax. (Set to launch early next year, the 3D channel plans to build up the biggest 3D content library in the world. My3D viewers will be able to see only trailers and behind-the-scenes snippets from films for up to 20 minutes.)

Also Hasbro has created 3D content with other partners, like the City of Los Angeles: virtual travel experiences that include visits to the LA Wax Museum and the Santa Monica Pier.

Other apps so far include sea life, shooter games in a virtual galaxy and more.

PPR's Fnac Aims Beyond France

Fnac wants to generate half its sales outside of France by 2015, says CEO Christophe Cuvillier.

ppr fnacThe French retailer is set to expand outside of its home territories-- in North Africa and South America. Its first Morocco outlet will open in 2011, together with more shops in Brazil.

Fnac gets two-thirds of all revenue in France.

By end 2010 Fnac will open its 20th Spanish shop and its 10th in Brazil. This year already saw Fnac store openings in Brussels, Florence and Leiria.

Fnac international sales are up by 8% in Q3, while French sales gain 1%. Sales in Brazil grow by 19%, and may overtake Spain as the retailer's biggest international market.

Pico Projector 2010 Sales Glowing

The worldwide pico and pocket projector market grows by 125% in 2010, compared to the same period last year. This emerging projector category includes all models delivering less than 500 lumens of brightness.

Pico ProjectorsPacific Media Associates (PMA) reports the largest market segment is the pico companion (includes all stand-alone battery powered models), with over 100,000 units in Q3 2010. DLP leads the quarter, with 51% of units and 53% of revenue.

Several major OEMs manufacture 25-50 lumen products with SVGA or wide VGA resolutions, good connectivity and battery life. Acer and Samsung are already shipping pico projectors, while Philips and Toshiba will ship in time for the holiday season.

PMA says the entire sub-500 lumen category (especially the pico companion and toy/gaming segments) is coming of age.

Some of the market's earliest entrants will push into related categories-- including camcorders (3M, Aiptek), digital cameras (GE, Nikon) and iPod docks (Optoma).

Netgear Hopes to Connect New TVs, Without Wires

Netgear announces its 3DHD Wireless Home Theatre Networking Kit (WNHDB3004). The package enables customer to connect TVs and other ethernet-enabled devices to the internet while boosting wifi range and signal strength.

netgear 3dhdThe kit contains x2 adapters-- one connects to home router or gateway (via ethernet cable) and serves as transmitter and the other serves as receiver. Each receiver connects to up to x4 ethernet enabled devices.

The adapter uses 4x4 MIMO and space time block coding (STBC). Signal range covers an are of up to 465 m^2. Netgear says it is capable of sending multiple HD video streams through multiple walls with no data loss.
