Meet the iPhone 5

PDFPrintE-mail

Apple reveals the iPhone 5-- taller (4" Retina display), thinner (18%), lighter (20%), faster (2X with a new A6 chip that's 22% smaller), and longer-lasting in battery power (finally!).

Tim Cook presented Apple's typically bullish outlook, showing off an impressive new Apple Store in Barcelona (complete with blue shirt-clad Geniuses and huge lines) and bragging about global domination in the tablet market.

The bigger display confirms earlier rumours... Apple is clearly aware of the success rivals (Samsung, HTC etc) have had with larger smartphones. That means you get a fifth row of icons on the home screen. Third-party apps (if not updated to the new screen size) will still work, but will appear with black borders on each side.

The total display resolution stays at 326 pixels per inch and we now have a 16:9 aspect ratio. According to Apple, widescreen movies will look better with 44% more color saturation than the iPhone 4S.

Rimage

Rimage Corporation launches Blu Lock anti-rip copy protection technology for Blu-ray Discs. Blu Lock is the first anti-rip copy protection technology that integrates directly into the Rimage Blu-ray Disc publishing solution, allowing a broad range of businesses to deliver digital content securely to their customers.

Blu Lock’s anti-rip copy protection provides on-the-fly protection of commercial and pre-release Blu-ray video content. “Currently the distribution of Blu-ray video content is at risk due to the lack of a high-definition anti-rip copy protection technology. Blu Lock technology is the first and only technology that prevents the piracy of such digital content,” says Chris Wells, Senior VP and GM of Rimage Disc Publishing. “It gives businesses the comfort that their valuable content is protected, preventing revenue loss from unauthorized copying of Blu-ray Discs.”

Rimage provides Blu Lock as an integral feature within the Rimage Software Suite (RSS). It is easy to use, and offers the flexibility to integrate into most disc production workflows. Blu Lock technology also preserves the user experience and playback compatibility, leaving the original media content unmodified, while providing robust protection and upgradability.

Opalum Intros "Floating" Speakers

PDFPrintE-mail

A speaker inspired by "the light, undulating falling of a sheet of paper along a wall"? So Opalum claims of the latest addition to the Flow TV speaker series, the Flow 1010.

Flow 1010The Flow 1010 is a wireless "floating" speaker ideal for use with flat panel TVs. It has a translucent acrylic glass front and is as thick as a standard LED TV, with a minimalist design from Scandinavian designer Eva Hanner.

More interesting is the digital audio technology inside-- "Actisonic," the combination of 10-driver array with advanced inverse fintering algorithms giving the Flow 1010 "control of air movement."

It also carries a pair of Class-D amplifiers-- 20W for high frequencies and 60W for lower frequencies. The speaker's wave shape apparently also firms front sound baffle, minimising vibrations and channeling sound towards the listener.

The speakers connect to the included hub device (via Actiline Digital Link) and controls comes via RF remote.

PDFPrintE-mail

HP adds the first non-laptop product to the high-end Spectre family-- the Spectre One, an All-in-One (AIO) PC with a 23.6-inch display just 11.5mm thick.

HP Spectre OneThe slim aluminium display comes at a price though. Unlike most newly-launched AIO PCs using the touch-friendly Windows 8, the Spectre One lacks a touchscreen.

HP also has other AIO PCs on offer-- the Envy 20 and 23 TouchSmart (with 20- and 23-inch touchscreens respectively) and the lower-end non-touch Pavilion 20.
