SVS Intros Ultra Series

PDFPrintE-mail

SVS launches a new speaker series boasting audiophile quality for more average budgets-- the Ultra series, complete with tower, bookshelf speaker, centre channel and flexible surround.

SVS UltraSupposedly designed by audio enthusiasts for audio enthusiasts, each speaker in the Ultra series goes through finite element analysis (FEA), a computer program simulating external forces on every speaker piece.

The series flagship is the Ultra Tower-- a 114cm tall tower with a unique upswept trapezoidal design. It carries a SoundMarch 3.35-way crossover, two 6.5-inch mid-range drivers and two opposite outfacing 8-inch woofers (aka "ForceFactor" woofer array).

The design also reduces internal standing waves while producing tighter low frequently response, SVS claims.

The rest of the series complements the Ultra Tower, with flush-mounted drives and rear-mounted bass reflex ports. The Ultra Surround carries two tweeters and two mid-range/woofer and allows configuration for either bipole or dipole operation.

Each Ultra Surround unit can also operate as x2 independent speaker systems ("Duet" configuration) within a single enclosure for 7.1 setups.

Meanwhile the Ultra Centre features a vertically aligned midrange and tweeter in a horizontal dispersion and two woofers.

SVS should start shipping the Ultra lineup from November 20, with each model available as a pair.

PadFone Gets Sequel

PDFPrintE-mail

Even in the current laptop-tablet hybrid era, the PadFone remains unique as a smartphone with a tablet accessory. Now Asus presents a bigger (and better?) sequel at a Milan launch event.

Padfone 2The PadFone 2 is certainly bigger-- the smartphone display gets an upgrade, being a 4.7-inch 720p Super IPS+ panel with IGZO technology. Powering the device is a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 chip (with 2GB RAM), a boost from the dual-core chip in the previous model.

The OS of choice is Android 4.0.4, but Asus promises a Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) upgrade will be available "shortly."

Apple: "Little More to Show"

PDFPrintE-mail

So at least part of the current batch Apple-related rumours is confirmed-- Apple sends out invites for a 23 October 2012 press event at the California Theatre, San Jose.

Apple event"We've got a little more to show you" the invite says below a colourful take on the familiar Apple logo.

What will Apple reveal at this event? Predictably all talk points towards the now mythical smaller (as in 7.85-inch) iPad. Meanwhile 9to5mac.com has what perhaps is a less interesting suggestion from an unnamed "high-profile US retailer"-- a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina Display.

Either way, "little" is surely the key word here...

Little over 2 weeks ago Fortune reported Apple was to send out launch invitations on October 10 2012. Looks like the anonymous "major Apple investor" spilling the beans got his date wrong, if only by 7 days.

Apple Lures Chip Designer from Samsung

PDFPrintE-mail

Rivals will be remain rivals-- according to the Wall Street Journal, Apple just managed to poach top chip designer Jim Mergard from the Samsung ranks.

iPhone 5 chipMergard is a 16-year AMD veteran, where he was VP and chief engineer before leaving for Samsung. He was one of the leads behind "Brazos," a high-end AMD chip development aiming at portable PC use.

“We are looking for the best and brightest chip heads…” a post from an Apple employee on LinkedIn says.

Judging from the bitter the Apple-Samsung rivalry (one culminating a patent infringement suit worth $1 billion), the hiring sounds less like simple headhunting and more like throwing salt at not-too-old wounds.

At Apple Mergard will surely work on the next generation of iDevice processor. Following that, Apple will have to produce the silicon... with its biggest partner, Samsung.
