Microsoft Pushes Back Dual-Screen Surface Release?

Microsoft might not release the dual-screen Surface Neo tablet and the associated Windows 10X OS in 2020, ZDNet report, the result of both the coronavirus affecting China-bases supply chains and a refocusing of efforts from the company.

According to connected journalist Mary Jo Foley, Chief Product Officer Panos Panay internally informed "some" of his team Microsoft will not only not deliver own Surface Neo dual-screen 10X devices in the calendar year, it will also not allow 3rd party dual-screen device running on the Windows variant to ship in 2020. Currently, the report adds, the priority is to get Windows 10X on single-screen devices first, turning it into something of a Chrome OS rival in the process.

LG Teases "Velvet" Phone

LG reveals the name of its upcoming flagship smartphone-- Velvet, a device the company claims will be set apart through a combination of a distinctive design and "tactile" elegance.

As the first of a smartphone range based around a new design philosophy (not to mention branding), Velvet features "evolutionary design departures." One example is the "Raindrop" camera. It has the three cameras and LED flash set in descending order by size on the upper-left corner of the device backside, a layout LG says is reminiscent of falling raindrops. The main camera sits slightly above the surface, while the two other lenses lie seamlessly beneath smooth glass.

IDC: Work-at-Home Brings Surge in Notebooks and Tablets

According to IDC, Q1 2020 sees spike of around 30% Y-o-Y in demand for notebooks and tablets across Europe, as coronavirus (aka Covid-19) lockdowns lead companies to equip employees to work from home while students set themselves to study remotely.

"This has led to many retailers and distributors in W. Europe running out of stock," the analyst says. "Disruption to the supply chain in China following the lockdown in Wuhan over the Chinese New Year cut deliveries into the European market by approximately 15%–20% in Q1 2020. More than 90% of the portable PCs and tablets imported into Europe are manufactured and assembled in China.”

The HiSense Colour E Ink Smartphone

Back at CES 2020 HiSense presented an unusual device-- the A5, a smartphone featuring a colour ePaper display, the result of recent development by E Ink. Now the company announces the device is set to hit the market soon in April 2020.

While most smartphones tout high refresh rates and fast chipsets, the A5 is a far more modest device. After all, while the front-lit 5.8-inch 1440 x 720 resolution display does indeed handle colour, it can only display 4096, a far cry from the millions LCD and OLED are capable of. Meanwhile the refresh rate is only impressive in comparison to other ePaper displays, and cannot handle video. However it does make for a great eReader, be it for text or comics.

Amazon-owned home security company Ring announces the 2nd generation Alarm, an update featuring one-touch buttons within smaller, sleeker hardware, as well as slimmer motion and contact sensors, all complete with a matte finish.

The one-touch buttons allow users to call for police, fire or medical assistance with just a 3-second tap. The system remains compatible with other Ring hardware, while the sensors are easier to mount. Like the previous generation, it detects motion, smoke, carbon monoxide and leaks, and pushes notifications to smartphones in case of problems.
