nPower PEGThe nPower PEG charges handheld devices without a wall unit-- it collects kinetic energy generated as the user moves.

The user places the charger vertically in their backpack or bag, where it collects energy the generates while walking or running.

It is compatible with over 3000 USB 2.0 compatible devices (including phones, media players and game consoles) through various iGo adapter tips. However larger devices (laptops/netbooks/tablets) are not compatible.

As Producers Decrease Plans, OEMs Increase Shipments

PDFPrintE-mail

DisplaySearch's latest report shows major LCD TV brands reducing production plans-- while OEMs and ODMs increase their monthly shipments.

LCD Production ChartThe top 16 LCD TV brands' combined production plan is down from 18.3m (in November 2010) to 15.4m (in March 2011). Total Q1 2011 production will be 46.3m units-- 12% decrease from Q4 2010.

DisplaySearch says while many regions' TV demand is uncertain (due to an unstable market environment) some TV brands are increasing their production quantities-- due to anticipation of demand for Q1 2011 product launches.

LCD TV OEM and ODM's monthly shipments (from December 2010 to March 2011) are up-- indicating increasing manufacture outsourcing (due to cost management, logistics, manufacturing scale and panel supply).

The Top 10 LCD monitor OEMs will increase their production in January by 4.3%-- over 14m units.

Content Discovery From the Living Room

PDFPrintE-mail

Vuze hopes to embed its cloud-based content aggregation engine, Fanhattan, into connected CE of the TV variety.

FanhattanFanhattan combines content from a variety of sources-- from subscription services like Netflix to renting from Amazon Video On Demand. All content is displayed in a 10' user interface designed for TV viewing.

Tying the service together is Vuze's recent acquisition, The Open Movie Database (TMDb)-- an online entertainment database redesigned for a TV-based interface with movie reviews (from Rotten Tomatoes) and trailers (from Youtube).

Being cloud-based, Fanhattan only requires a thin client on host device. It is also in HTML5, making it available on many different devices.

Fanhattan will be first available on PC and Mac "early 2011"-- as soon as Vuze strikes deals with content providers.

Apple Store Magic for Disney

PDFPrintE-mail

Disney turns an old Times Square retail space into a retail theme park-- an interactive store complete with attractions and exhibits.

Disney StoreReports say the idea to fashion the store on a grand scale comes from Steve Jobs (who sits on Disney's board since 2006). The New York Times reports Jobs shared information on Apple store setups, as well as encouraged the House of Mouse to first build a prototype in which to work out bugs.

The store emphasises on shopping as an experience-- from a personalised theatre experience to an interactive magic mirror inside a 20' tall princess castle. There will also be special activities and events timed with major Disney releases. Illuminated floors guide shoppers through each department.

Oracle-powered mobile POS systems handle transactions via hand-held miniature registers. The system even emails receipts to clients.

Should the new model prove successful Disney will refurbish all its 340 outlets in a similar manner-- including its European stores-- sometime in the next 5-7 years.
