Best Buy UK Launch Underwhelms

PDFPrintE-mail

Best Buy Europe chief marketing officer Jeff Severts admits his lack of satisfaction with the retail chain's UK launch in an interview with Marketing Week. In his own words: “I’m not satisfied that enough people in the UK know about Best Buy or understand it with the intimacy I’d like."

Best BuyAlongside the chain's failing to make its desired impact on the UK market (despite launching 6 stores in 2010), the last 6 months see the exit of a number of senior Best Buy executives-- including European CEO Scott Wheway, branded operations chief Paul Antoniadis and head of online DeVere Forster.

Analysts expect Best Buy UK to post losses of £45m this year-- fuelling speculation of the chain's take on the European market falling flat.

Severts however insists business remains on course, with plans to open 80 more UK stores remaining the same (only on a now unknown timescale).

Commentors also suggest declining W. European PC sales make part of the chain's launch disappointment-- where Gartner says consumer spending is shifting from PCs towards tablet devices, alongside adopting a wait-and-see approach (where customers prefer to wait for Q1 2011's new products and cheaper tablets).

Galaxy Tab 10.1A 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor powers the Tab 10.1, and it comes with either 16GB or 32GB memory. It also carries the usual extras-- x2 cameras (one back-facing, the other front-facing), USB/bluetooth/wifi/HSPA connectivity, gyroscope, accelerometer and digital compass.

Dual speakers also provide surround sound, alongside a standard 3.5mm audio jack.

Construction is now plastic, not metal, making the device lighter (and weighing a total of 599 grams).

The device should be available in March, with no pricing details out yet.

Mobile Broadband Congestion to Worsen?

PDFPrintE-mail

mobile broadbandITU warns network bottlenecks will be increasingly unavoidable if governments don't support mobile broadband growth-- by accelerating fibre roll-out and allow greater spectrum availablility.

Smartphone users consume an averate of 5x more data capacity than non-smartphone mobile users, with the W.W. number of smartphones predicted to rise from today's 500m handsets to over 2bn by 2015. Operators are already trying to keep up with demand via multi-pronged strategies-- but not all are succeeding, especially in high-usage cities like London. This results in chronic network unavailability problems.

ITU also estimates W.W. mobile broadband subscriptions will reach 1bn by Q1 2011's end, as mobile signals cover 90% of the globe.

Currently 98 countries have National Broadband Plans-- a number set to increase over this year. Meanwhile European operators are already campaigning for the increase in spectrum for mobile communications, alongside harmonised spectrum allocations for latest-gen technologies. One suggestion is to allow access to unused broadcast spectrum-- a.k.a. "white-spaces"-- to help alleviate the spectrum squeeze.

PC Market's W. European Slight Decline

PDFPrintE-mail

PCGartner reports W. Europe Q4 2010 PC shipments total 19.4m-- a 4.4% decline when compared to Q4 2009.

The analyst says the PC market continues what it calls its "downward spiral", with W. European shipments declining by 8.1% between October and end of December 2010. As PC vendors remain cautious and delay orders, mobile PC shipments in the consumer market decline by 2% in the same period.

It's clear consumer spending is shifting from PCs to other devices-- media tablets, gaming machines and e-readers. This is due to the still weak economy, where consumers decide to wait for Q1 2011's new devices and cheaper media tablets.

The harsh winter in a number of countries also minimises foot traffic into retail shops.

The top 3 PC vendors see Y-o-Y declines in W. Europe-- HP regains top position in Q4 2010 (from Acer) with 22.1% market share, retaining the lead in the professional and desk-based PC segments, but losing the top position to Acer in the consumer PC segment. Acer has 20.8% market share (down by 2.2% from last year), with a 13.5% decline in shipments. Dell comes third, with 9.8% market share, thanks to a slight pickup in professional PC demand.

Gartner also says W. Europe's professional PC market ultimately remains flat in Q4 2010-- increasing Euro/Dollar exchange rates limit any price reductions, resulting in a 0.9% Y-o-Y increase.
