LG Reveals Retina Rival

LG Display shows its highest resolution development in mobile panels-- a 5" LCD smartphone display panel handling 1080p HD (1920x1080) resolution.

LG PanelBoasting a pixel density of 440ppi, the LG Display panel is not the most pixel dense available (that claim belongs to Toshiba's 6" 498ppi tablet panel) but is more ideal for consumer applications.

It has a 16:9 aspect ratio (designed for HD content) and uses Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS) technology-- an IPS variant LG says has wide viewing angles, fast response times, low power consumption and improved brightness efficiency.

The panel should be available in mobile devices following releases in H2 2012, and LG will show it off at SID 2012 Display Week, Boston, on June 4 2012.

The Alternative In-Car Control Concept

PDFPrintE-mail

Garmin proposes an alternative to touchscreens for controlling in-dash entertainment systems-- a console-mounted multi-controller concept combining infrared sensors with a rotary dial.

Garmin ControlDesigned to minimise driver distraction and "eyes off the road," the controller concept consists of a large knob with 4 buttons and IR sensors. The sensors detect when a hand approaches the knob, "waking up" menu buttons and the display menu when required.

The 4 buttons on the rotary controller allow the user to switch between audio, apps, communications and navigation menus, while further preset buttons (with infrared sensors) allow the driver to "feel" for the right button without pressing it.

The system can be tied to HVAC controls, vehicle bus information, connected services and smartphone apps.

Garmin appears to be moving away from the portable GPS industry-- it already makes integrated cockpits for the aviation industry, and now wants to use that experience in automobile space.
