Lamborghini: Mobile Device Contender

PDFPrintE-mail

A new competitor drives into the luxury mobile device market-- Lamborghini, with 4 devices in varying levels of gaudy soon launching in Russia (and maybe elsewhere).

Lamborghini PhoneThe Lamborghini lineup includes an Android smartphone, a tablet and 2 gold-plated feature phones.

The Tl700 smartphone has a metal and crocodile skin body and sapphire glass protecting the display-- not too shabby for what otherwise is a very basic Android 2.3 device with a 3.7-inch 800x480 display, 4GB internal storage and 5MP rear-facing/0.3MP front-facing cameras.

The tablet is also rather basic. It runs on Android 2.3 and carries a 1.2GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage (plus memory card slot), 2 cameras (2 and 5MP) and a 9.7-inch 1024x768 sapphire-glass protected display. It appears to lack the flashy construction typical of such "luxury" devices, though.

Lamborghini promises Android 4.0 upgrades for both devices.

Finally there are the 2 feature phones-- the TL688 Spyder and the TL820 Spyder 2. Both are as average as they are flashy, with hand-crafted gold-plated cases and very little else.

Lamborghini gives no word on releasing its mobile offerings outside of Russia-- but with Nokia's Vertu facing an uncertain future, it might find a niche in the luxury market.

Can Intel Win in TV Services?

PDFPrintE-mail

Will Intel hit the jackpot with its virtual TV service? According to Reuters, such plans prove to be a challenge as media content providers refuse to offer Intel discounts on content licensing and unbundling.

IntelIn other words Intel cannot beat the cable companies in spending on content, despite having a quartet of industry veterans helping with negotiations.

Intel plans to take over living rooms (and the TV business) with a "virtual" TV network-- offering smaller and cheaper channel bundles than those cable subscriptions currently offer with a STB and over-the-top service. Chips from the company would power the service, with features including improved digital rights protection and tools for face and audience analysis.

The Reuters sources claim Intel should launch the video service "before the end of the year."

Ultimately, the Intel stabs at TV serve one main purpose-- getting Intel chips into more devices. While one can find Intel processors in 80% of global PCs, the company failed to achieve success in the mobile and interconnected device fields.

Microsoft's War for the Living Room Continues

PDFPrintE-mail

Microsoft plans to turn the Xbox 360 into even more than just a games console/online media player combination-- Xbox SmartGlass promises to unite all screens in the house (including mobile devices) with the machine.

Xbox SmartglassXbox SmartGlass is a wifi remote app. It allows users to control both video and game content with tablets or smartphones, using the Xbox 360 console as a hub.

First seen at E3 2012, the app also acts as a second screen-- showing extra video content depending on the content on screen. One interesting E3 demo uses HBO TV series Game of Thrones, with an interactive map on the tablet while the console plays an episode.

The app will be available for both iDevices and Androids, as well as (obviously) Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

According Microsoft, more American customers are using the console to consume media than playing online video games through Xbox Live apps for services such as Netflix and Hulu. European customers can access content from the BBC (UK), Telefonica (Spain), ZDF (Germany) and MediaSet (Italy).
