Micron Intros Crucial X8 Portable SSD

Micron announces an entry-level addition to the to the Crucial portfolio of storage products-- the Crucial X8 portable SSD featuring a USB-C 10Gb/s (USB 3.1 gen 2) connection designed for general-purpose consumer use.

Crucial X8The X8 uses a NVMe SSD based on the Crucial P1 with QLC NAND flash, and features a sleek aluminium and plastic case built with a durable unibody core. Performance clocks at up to 1050MB/s read, and Micron suggests use cases such as file backups or transfers, as well as the expansion of game console storage. It is compatible with applications such as Windows Backup, macOS Time Machine, Windows Bitlocker to Go and Apple FileVault, along with 3rd party endpoint protection suites from the likes of Symantec and McAfee.

Google Buys Fitbit

Google confirms an earlier Reuters report with the acquisition of Fitbit, a deal worth $2.1 billion bringing the activity tracker maker directly within the massive fold of the search giant itself.

IDC: Tablets Return to Growth in Q3

The global tablet market sees a return to growth in Q3 2019, IDC reports-- shipments total 37.6 million units, a 1.9% Y-o-Y increase, with Apple maintaining leadership of the market while Amazon beats Samsung to 2nd place.

The new iPad leads Apple tablet shipments to grow by 21.8% Y-o-Y in Q3 2019. It also brings a 31.4% share of the market, up from 26.3% in Q3 2018. The latest device includes the Smart Connector, and combined with the iPad OS Apple is the largest player in detachable/hybrid space, as well as a greater threat to the traditional PC market.

LG OLED TVs Get G-Sync Update

PC gamers wanting to take advantage of the biggest screen in the house will be able to do so in even better form on a number of 2019 LG OLED TVs, as the company announces a firmware update bringing Nvidia G-Sync support.

LG Nvidia GsyncSets receiving the update include the E9 (65- and 55-inch), C- (77-, 65- and 55-inch) and B9 (65- and 55-inch). G-Sync support promises "the smoothest, most immersive gaming experience," with images free of flickering, tearing or stuttering. However, to take advantage of graphics optimised for TVs up to 77-inch in size customers need to own PCs powered by either GeForce RTX 20 or GTX 16-series GPUs.
