Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c, 8c SoCs for Lower-Cost Laptops

Qualcomm follows on the 2018 announcement of the Snapdragon 8cx SoC for high-end always-connected PCs with a lower-cost option-- the Snapdragon 7c for entry-level and the 8c for mid-tier always-connected notebooks.

Aimed, as mentioned earlier, at entry-level machines, the Snapdragon 7c platform promises a 25% performance boost and up to twice the battery life compared to "competing platforms." It consists of an octa-core Kryo 486 CPU and Adreno 618 GPU, as well as an AI Engine able to deliver up to 5 trillion operations per second (TOPS). In addition, an X15 LTE modem delivers wireless connectivity.

IDC: Surface, iPad Refreshes Keep EMEA Tablets Alive

EMEA tablet shipments total 10.9 million units in Q3 2019, IDC reports-- a -8.2% Y-o-Y drop brought about by the continued contraction of the consumer segment, even if demand remains healthy on the commercial side.

In fact, while consumers still lack compelling reasons to refresh devices, enterprise tablet shipments see a 4.2% Y-o-Y increase due to a digital transformation bringing a larger number of usage scenarios.

"In a quarter usually marked by seasonality, where there is a balance between the top two companies, Apple maintained and consolidated its market leadership," the analyst remarks. "The growing market saturation is driving consolidation, as the top 5 companies become increasingly dominant, and in developed economies, like in W. Motorola Brings Pop-Up Camera in One Hyper

Motorola straddles the line between midrange and flagship with the One Hyper-- a smartphone with a motorised pop-up front-facing camera, meaning the 6.5-inch display lacks any oversized bezels or notches.

Thanks to the pop-up camera, the 2340 x 1080 resolution display features a 90% screen-to-body ratio. The actual front-facing camera features a 32MP sensor, and accompanies a rear-facing dual-camera array consisting of a 64MP main sensor and a 8MP wide angle lens. Motorola also says users get an optional "quad pixel" mode able to merge every 4 pixels together for improved light capture, as well as other shot optimisation features.

Troubled Times for Magic Leap?

Much hyped virtual reality startup Magic Leap might be going through a spot of trouble-- according to The Information, sales of the Magic Leap One Creator Edition mixed-reality headset total just 6000 units after 6 months.

Magic Leap While the headset cost $2300, the company actually had high hopes in terms of sales targets. The Information says CEO Rony Abovitz promised investors Magic Leap One sales reaching "at least" 1 million units in the first year of availability. Reportedly he was later convinced of a more realistic sales goal of 100000 units, but sales are so bad The Information claims the company is giving units to employees for free.
