Sonos Retires "Legacy" Products

Owners of older Sonos products might need to start looking into potential upgrades, as Sonos announces it will no longer push software updates for a number of "legacy" products starting from May 2020.

SonosSonos has already ended support for a couple of older devices, such as the Sonos Dock and CR100. As for products to not receive updates in the near future, the company lists the original Zone Players, the Connect and Connect:Amp, the first generation Play:5 and the Bridge. Of course, customers will ask why Sonos will no longer support these products, and the company simply says these old products are "stretched to their technical limits" in terms of memory and processing power.

Samsung Claims First 5G Tablet

Samsung announces what it claims is the first 5G tablet-- the Galaxy Tab S6 5G, a variant of last year's Galaxy Tab S6 featuring a 5G modem, specifically the Snapdragon X50, instead of the integrated X24 LTE modem.

Set to initially go on sale in Samsung's home S. Korea, the Galaxy Tab S6 5G features otherwise identical specs as the previous model. It is a 10.5-inch device with a QHD+ Super AMOLED display and quad speakers with Dolby Atmos, and inside are the same Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. An S-Pen is also included for stylus input.

Philips Drops Appliances Division

Philips sets to further transform into a company wholly focused on health and related equipment as it puts its domestic appliances division, a business it describes as "not a strategic fit," on sale.

PhilipsThe domestic appliances division produces coffee machines, vacuum cleaners and airfryers, as well as 2019 sales worth €2.3 billion. Over the coming 12-18 months, Reuters reports, Philips will carve it out into a separate entity, similar to what it has already done with the lighting and CE divisions. According to a "quick and dirty" calculation by ING analyst Mark Hesselink, the domestic appliances division is worth around €3bn.

Nintendo: No New Switch for 2020

Nintendo skips the traditional console refresh cycle and cuts down any number of rumours as president and CEO Shuntaro Furukawa tells investors the company has "no plans" for a 2020 update of the hybrid machine.

Instead, the venerable gaming company plans to focus on "communicat[ing] the appeal" of the Switch, in both regular and portable-only Lite flavours, as well expanding the current userbase. After all, Switch sales are not too shabby at the moment, with overall sales managing to overtake lifetimes sales of the much loved classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) at 52.48 million units.

IKEA Parties With Teenage Engineering

IKEA takes on the house party as it launches Frekvens, a line of modular Bluetooth-enabled speakers, party lights and appropriate furniture designed in collaboration with Swedish CE maker Teenage Engineering.

The results of the partnership have been a long time coming-- after all, IKEA first announced the partnership back in June 2017. At the heart of the Frekvens (translates to "frequency") collection is the portable music system. It consists of an 8-inch tall speaker complete with 10-hour battery life and either black and red or black and yellow design, a larger option with a subwoofer and a small 4-inch speaker complete with belt clip for carrying around the party.
