EU Investigates Qualcomm Over Antitrust Claims

A Qualcomm Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing reveals the chipmaker is yet again under investigation by the EU for possible anti-competitive tactics in the radio frequency chip market.

First revealed by Reuters, the filing shows the EU is investigating whether Qualcomm abused its market muscle in 5G baseband processors to force companies to adopt its radio frequency front end chips instead of 3rd party solutions from the likes of Broadcom or Skyworks. The investigation started on 3 December 2019, and is the latest in a string of regulatory issues leading to billions of dollars in fines for Qualcomm. Last year the company lost a case with the US Federal Trade in Commission (FTC), one currently locked in appeal.

Dyson Patents Headphones-Air Purifier Combo

Air pollution is getting bad enough for CE makers to stand up and take notice-- such as seen in a recently published Dyson patent for a pair of headphones able to double as an air purifier.

First noted by Bloomberg, the patent describes a pair of filters housing filters and a nozzle for the wearer to breathe purified air. The filters are found inside the earcups, which also contain a motor powering a 35-40mm fan. The fans spin at 12000 rpm, and draw around 1.4l of air per second into the headphones through a filter able to stop particles such as dust and bacteria. In turn, the filtered air travels to a mouthpiece at around 2.4l per second.

Asus launches a 17.3-inch portable gaming monitor under the ROG brand-- the Strix XG17AHPE, a battery-powered display featuring 1920 x 1080 resolution IPS panel with 240Hz refresh rate and variable refresh support.

Asus portable monitorThe battery inside the XG17AHPE is a 7800mAh number, and promises to power up to 3.5 hours of gaming on a single charge. In total the monitor is 1cm and weighs 1060g with a "super narrow bezel design." The monitor is adaptive sync compliant, and as such can adjust to sync with graphics card output for smoother, tear-free fast-moving visuals, although Asus does not say whether it has FreeSync or G-Sync certification.

Coronavirus Impacts Tech Manufacturing!

Foxconn says it will meet all manufacturing obligations following the outbreak of the coronavirus in China, Reuters reports, even after the most recent Apple results point out uncertainty due to the disease.

“We do not comment on our specific production practices, but we can confirm that we have measures in place to ensure that we can continue to meet all global manufacturing obligations,” a Foxconn statement reads.

BlackBerry Phones No More as TCL Ends Partnership?

Chinese smartphone maker TCL announces it will no longer make BlackBerry-branded devices, as August 2020 brings the end of a 4-year licensing and tech support partnership, one TCL will not renew going forward.

“We do regret to share however that as of August 31, 2020, TCL Communication will no longer be selling BlackBerry-branded mobile devices,” a note posted on the BlackBerry Mobile Twitter account reads. “TCL has no further rights to design, manufacturers or sell any new BlackBerry mobile devices.”
