It’s clear N97 is a great smartphone but not an iPhone killer. Nokia will try new weapons to shake Apple off its market share: Internet services, next-generation wireless technology (LTE), and mobile apps.

Point & Find is a technology to find info and services on the Internet by pointing a camera at real-world objects. The beta release lets users watch a film trailer, read a review, and find a nearby cinema to buy tickets—all by pointing a phone at a movie poster.

Nokia’s Qt is a platform that lets apps to run on different systems. Nokia also has a videoconferencing pet that acts as an avatar of the caller, Mobile 3D video, and Mobile Millenium, a next-gen real-time traffic data platform that will scare the heck out of GPS makers (how about calling it “Harmin’ Garmin”?)

Osaka Giant Kisses 90% of Profit Good-bye

 The world’s most successful CE giant, Panasonic, kills its annual profit forecast by 90%. As if the Japanese haven’t had it tough enough for years, just when a hit with display technology takes them out of the rough, the world economy dumps them back in the economic quagmire..

A strong yen, sluggish sales and heavy discounting as electronics makers fight for market share…all this must sound familiar to Japan’s managers who struggled with more than a decade of national economic malaise.

Panasonic says its business conditions are "deteriorating sharply.” Sales in the top line in the last fiscal quarter slipped 4% (sales were still healthy in flat-panel TVs, DVD recorders, and home appliances). But the global downturn hits the bottom line too as it brings intensifying price competition, yen advances and the rising costs of energy and raw materials.

Sony also cut $1 billion off its profit projection for the year ending March 2009.

PC Gaming Market is Bigger Than You Think

Jon Peddie Research (JPR) says” growth is an amazing “ in a new report on the estimated worldwide PC gaming hardware shipments and regional market share out to 2012.

  • The Enthusiast segment has a worldwide CAGR of 9%
  • The Performance segment will have a CAGR of 19%
  • The Mainstream segment CAGR is 21%
The market for PC gaming hardware (just over $20 billion) will grow to over $34 billion by 2012 - and those systems pull in an additional $6 billion in software and services sales.

JPR thinks an economic recession could stunt the assumed growth of the console gaming market, and shift business to PC gaming. Why? Because the cost of an HDTV for the console is a serious investment when a console is limited in what it can do compared to a personal computer.

However, all countries are not alike in their PC gaming habits. Jon Peddie Research looked at gaming cultures worldwide as an influence on hardware sales in different regions. Hardware suppliers are cautioned: Don't get caught sending the wrong stuff to the wrong place.

In addition to branded and boutique fully assembled PCs, JPR discovered there is a robust market of do-it-yourselfers and consumers who upgrade their PCs with high- performance gaming graphics boards.

"Don't let the retail numbers fool you," says Ted Pollak, co-author of the report series. "Enthusiast PC gamers often latch onto one or two games that offer multiplayer options and stick to these titles for years. Hardware is where they spend the big bucks. The retail numbers don't capture the casual and digitally distributed games either. Retail software figures are not an accurate barometer for the health of the PC gaming industry."

Returned Products: Most of Them Work

OK, we knew this as well as any retailer does but now it’s official as Accenture has completed a study. Two out of every three CE products returned to retailers are in working order. Another 27% return as “buyer's remorse”. That only leaves 5% as the actually defective.

The study makes suggestions on how to prevent returns and how to process them more cost effectively. Worth reading…
