Sony Corporation and FIFA announce an agreement : FIFA will produce the world's first FIFA World Cup in 3D (up to 25 of the 2010 matches) using Sony's 3D professional cameras.

"Global sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup are very important drivers of new technology, particularly in the TV market", explains Tom Morrod, Senior Analyst, TV Technology at Screen Digest.

"The news that the FIFA World Cup will be filmed in 3D for the first time will certainly increase the uptake rate of 3D TVs… As a result of this news, and an increasingly bullish industry outlook on 3D, Screen Digest has increased its forecast, and now estimates that 13.6m 3D TV sets will be installed in Europe by 2013."

Now "MERA-Image" is for Profit

In USA, the Mobile Enhancement Retailer Association (MERA) changes its name to Mobile Electronics Retailer Association and becomes the “new MERA” as the non-profit gets "purchased" by a for-profit... InstallerNet.

MERA

More than 2000 InstallerNet retailers will become members. InstallerNet sells installation gift cards by big retailers (Walmart, Amazon, Crutchfield) which don't provide on-site installation (gift cards sell alongside car stereo products).

The customer buys the card and calls a toll-free number to be directed to the local InstallerNet retailer who performs the installation for a set price. Sounds like a good idea for Europe...

Nintendo Takes A Page from Kindle's Book

PDFPrintE-mail
Nintendo Takes A Page from Kindle's Book Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata is considering Kindle's search and download tactic for selling new games.

Iwata is not sure when the industry will move to digital downloads. But as smartphone and iPhone buyers are not Nintendo's customer profile, Kindle's model would better suit Nintendo's customer base. Sony's PSP Go sold less than expected (no slot for media and relies on internet downloads) as retailers were reluctant as they don't get additional income from software sales. And that makes Nintendo's Iwata very cautious.

Now at 28m, the GPS subscriber base will grow an avg. of 33.7% per year to reach 160m users WW in 2015.

In USA and Japan with mass market GPS handsets, mobile navigation services already surpassed 3% and 4% respectively of the mobile subscriber base. In Europe, PNDs will prevail as the navigation solution for some years as mobile navigation services are adopted more slowly.
