Smartphone Shipments to Nearly Reach 1BN in 2015

PDFPrintE-mail

IDC predicts the WW smartphone market will grow by 55% Y-o-Y in 2011, with shipments reaching 472m units-- a figure the analyst predicts will nearly double to reach 982m units in 2015.

WW smartphone shipments in 2010 total around 305m units.

Fuelling the smartphone market's growth is falling average selling prices, increased phone functionality and lower-cost data plans, amongst other factors-- all making smartphones more accessible to a wider customer range.

Mobile Market 2011

The analyst expects Android to grow by more than 40% in 2011's second half, with a "significant and growing" number of vendors propelling such growth-- and its becoming top mobile OS WW in Q4 2010.

Symbian, meanwhile, continues losing market share as top supporter Nokia moves towards Windows Phone 7 (even if it commited itself to support Symbian until 2016).

iOS is 2011's 3rd ranking OS-- one IDC expects will grow at a relatively modest pace as the smartphone market matures and diversified. The analyst also predicts some decline in market share for Apple's OS in the 2011 - 2015 period, even if still it still expects iOS shipment volume growth to be "significant".

IDC predicts Windows Phone 7 will achieve the number 2 rank by 2015-- barring any obstacles in Nokia's transition to the OS. High volume WP7 growth will only really kick off once Nokia starts shipping its WP7 devices, particularly as Mango-powered devices by other vendors will only be available by late 2011.

Finally Blackberry OS will maintain its number 4, even if it will see some market share decline through the 2011 - 2015 period as shipment volumes grow.

Sony's Next Gen Gaming Device: The Vita

PDFPrintE-mail

Unveiled at E3, Sony launches its next gen, quad core gaming handheld, the PlayStation Vita.

VitaPart of Sony’s networked strategy to connecting all its CE devices, Vita lets gamers to play against people using PlayStation 3 consoles over the internet (the currently besieged PlayStation Network) via cellphone networks as well as wi-fi hotspots.

Shipping at end of 2011, prices for wifi model are expected to be 249 euro and euro 299 for 3G.

In America, the cellphone network service is exclusive to AT&T and you buy the 3G model only from AT&T. So you can expect similar deals cut with telcos across Europe. As these deals are more complicated in Europe, one suspects there will be delays, even once Europe's big four (UK, France, Germany, Italy) are covered.

Vita, with an accelerometer, features 6-axis motion sensors, dual  thumbsticks controls, the now popular front- and rear-facing cameras, and 5" OLED screen. PSVita offers GPS location-tracking technology if you are in the US.

Wireless Peripherals Get More Secure

PDFPrintE-mail

Wireless Desktop 2000Microsoft's old warhorse-- the wireless mouse and keyboard combo-- gets a new version with  additional security to make sure no one snoops on your customers while they type.

The Wireless Desktop 2000 keyboard is Microsoft's first to carry Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit encryption technology, preventing the interception and deciphering of users' keystrokes.

The keyboard pairs up with the included wireless mouse 2000 BlueTrack technology in order to work on any surface-- so long it's not clear glass or mirrored surfaces, of course.

It also has a pillow-textured palm rest for support, while the mouse has enchanced side grips and four-way scrolling.

The Shirt Looking at Your Sleep

PDFPrintE-mail

SleepshirtNyx Devices plans to look at your customers while they sleep-- just not in the creepy way. The company is developing Somnus, a nightshirt with embedded fabric electronics monitoring its wearer's breathing patterns.

Sleep pattern monitoring usually involves hooking up a test subject to a whole range of scary looking sensors to analyse brain activity, muscle movements, heart rates. Not the Somnus shirt, whose electronics link up to a single chip in the shirt pocket.

The chip determines the wearer's sleep phase (either REM, light sleep or deep sleep). Once the user wakes up, they can upload their stats to Nyx's website alongside any other data such as their alcohol and caffeine consumption. Thus, one can finally learn whether their boozy evenings truly affect their zzz's.

Nyx hopes the Somnus shirt will be available next year following more tests of its approach to sleep. Meanwhile we'll keep on snoozing in our regular jammies and hope for the (nighttime) best.
