What Does the Google Pipeline Hold?

PDFPrintE-mail

The Google Q4 2012 earnings call has more than mentions of profits and revenues. The search giant slips hints on how  Motorola Mobility might bring about new hardware offerings in the near future.

XphoneApparently at the time of acquisition Motorola had a 12-18 month product pipeline-- one it is "still working through." If this is the case, new products might arrive as early as Q2 2013, maybe at May's Google I/O.

The statement spurred fresh rumours on the "X phone", a mysterious iPhone/Galaxy S killer supposedly in development at Motorola. First revealed by the Wall Street Journal, "X" will be a "marquee handset with cutting-edge features to stand apart from existing phones."

Following the phone, Motorola will also work on an "X" tablet, the WSJ sources continue.

PDFPrintE-mail

Nokia returns to being a profitable business for the first time since Q1 2011 on Q4 2012 with operating profit reaching €439 million, an improvement from the €954m loss from the previous year.

NokiHowever mobile device sales are down by -24% Y-o-Y-- from 113.5m to 86.3m units-- while "smart device" sales drop by -66% Y-o-Y to 6.6m units as the company continues its shift from high-volume/low-cost Symbian smartphones to Windows Phone.

“We are very encouraged that our team’s execution against our business strategy has started to translate into financial results. Most notably we are pleased that Nokia Group reached underlying operating profitability in the fourth quarter and for the full year 2012," CEO Stephen Elop says.

2012 was a hard year for Nokia, with operating loss reaching €2.3 billion. As a result, the company is not making dividend payments for the year, the first time the company hasn't done so since at least 1871.

Imminent Rescue for HMV?

PDFPrintE-mail

Around 50 potential suitors are looking to rescue HMV, The Sunday Times reports as CEO Trevor Moore says he is "convinced" the future of the 92-year old retailer can be secured.

HMVAt stake are 223 stores and over 4120 employees. Deloitte currently has administration duties.

The paper says a number of entertainment giants (including 20th Century Fox, Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony) have plans for an HMV rescue deal, complete with generous credit terms and cut CD and DVD prices.

“They don’t want their only choice [of retailer] to be Tesco or Amazon,” one source tells The Times. HMV still holds around 20% of the UK music and DVD market.

Universal has further interest in ensuring HMV survives-- it has rent liability for 16 HMV stores through its 2012 EMI acquisition.

HMV Canada owners Hilco are thought to be among the suitors currently in talks with HMV administrators Deloitte. Game confirmed interested in acquiring a number of HMV stores, while other supposed potential bidders include private equity firms Endless and Better Capital.
