Dixons Retail-owned PIXmania bids farewell to brick-and-mortar retail in Spain, France, Belgium and Portugal in order to concentrate efforts on its online operations.

PixmaniaThe retailer blames the closures on the current state of the market, which, as CEO Phil Birbeck puts it "forced [PIXmania] to reassess its goals." Fiscal H1 2013 saw Dixons paying off a £45.2 million writedown in the "goodwill value" of the struggling retailer, whose sales dropped by -15% Y-o-Y for the period.

Dixons took full of PIXmania on August 2012 after paying founders Jean-Emile and Steve Rosenblum €10m in cash for their 22% stake. Back in 2006 Dixons bought 77% of PIXmania for €266m.

PIXmania continues to sell online in 26 countries and its e-Merchant platform also handles multi-channel operations for Dixons UK & Ireland and 3rd party clients (including Carrefour).

ISE 2013 visitors can warm up from the chilly Amsterdam weather with a visit to the Cineak stand-- where the company allows one to test out the heating/cooling system inside its home theatre seats.

Cineak seatThe ventilation is built into the seats and blows warm or cool air through perforations in the leather backrest and seat. According to company president Alvin Hellemans the technology is unique, and adds to the comfort of the heat theatre experience.

Cineak seats have another addition at ISE 2013-- an integrated LaunchPort iPad charging mount. Built inside a redesigned cup holder, the LaunchPort is housed inside a custom mount, with the cup holder hiding all wires.

Also seen at the show is the Grafton, the latest take on the club chair design from Cineak. It incorporates all Cineak technologies (including motorised footrest) and features a wooden design element on the armrests and back.

It is available in a variety of wood types and colours as either a stand-alone chair, loveseat or seating configurations sharing armrests.

Philips Exits Home Entertainment

PDFPrintE-mail

Philips bids farewell to the home entertainment market-- Funai Electric will take over the Philips Lifestyle Entertainment business (audio, video, multimedia and accessories) for €150 million and a regular brand licensing fee for 5-1/2 years with an option to renew for another 5 years.

PHilipsThe acquisition provides much needed funds to the ailing Philips, whose Q4 2012 losses total €355m. Philips blame the loss on the €503m fine imposed by the European Commission on the CRT price fixing "cartel" Philips made part of between 1996 and 2006.

Excluding the fine, Philips income totals €875m.

The Lifestyle business will not immediately go to Funai-- while audio (including the high-end Fidelio unit) goes to Funai during H2 2013, the TV business has to wait until 2017 due to the 2012 TP Vision joint venture with Hong Kong's TPV.

"With this transaction we are taking another step in reshaping the Consumer Lifestyle portfolio and transforming Philips into the leading technology company in health and well-being," Philips CEO Frans van Houten says. As part of the "Accelerate!" restructuring plan the Philips Consumer Lifestyle unit will concentrate on making more personal care devices, domestic appliances and coffee machines.
