Protests Affect Fnac Darty Results

Fnac Darty reports revenue growth of 0.7% to €7.35 billion (excluding the Netherlands) for 2019, with "exceptional events" and ongoing protests such as those by the yellow vest movement affecting holiday revenues.

In total, the retailer says protests taking place both on Q1 and Q4 2019 resulted in a loss in revenues worth €70 million. France and Switzerland see turnover rise by 3.4%, but operational margin is down to 4.3% as the aforementioned protests offset the successful integration of Nature & Découvertes. Belgium and Luxembourg turnover is up by 03% to €596m, a -0.4% drop on comparable base. Operational margins are also down in the region, from 2.5% to 1.9%.

Casio Takes on Garmin With G-Shock GBD-H1000

Casio announces a smart-enabled addition to the G-Shock range-- the G-Shock GBD-H1000, a chunky number featuring a hart rate monitor together with GPS, altitude/barometric pressure, compass, temperature and acceleration sensors.

The GPS includes GLONASS support, boosting accuracy and connection speed, and Casio says the H1000 can estimate VO2 Max by blending heart rate and GPS data. As a result, the smartwatch can measure both aerobic and anaerobic training effect from outdoor workouts, a feature found in more advanced Garmin fitness watches such as the Fenix 6 and Forerunner 945.

Lenovo Updates ThinkPad Portfolio

Lenovo announces a trio of additions to the ThinkPad portfolio-- the T, X and L series, designed to provide a "broad customer choice and a smarter workforce experience" with a range of features and a choice of Intel or AMD processors.

The company claims it is the first to offer laptops running on the AMD Ryzen PRO 4000 Mobile processor, as well as a selection of 10th gen Intel Core vPro processors. In addition, the laptops offer features such as smartphone-style always-on "Modern Standby," Wifi 6 and up to CAT 16 WWAN connectivity, unified communications function keys, built-in ThinkShield security solutions and UHD, OLD and Dolby Vision display options.

The First 5G Sony Smartphone

Sony announces a successor to last year's super-tall Xperia 1 flagship-- the Xperia 1 II (Mark two), a device featuring a 21:9 6.5-inch OLED HDR display and, in a first for the company, 5G connectivity.

Revealed at the Sony MWC replacement livestream, the Xperia 1 II is a handset with a focus set firmly on photography. It carries a triple-lens camera incorporating "industry-leading" Sony Alpha technology and specially calibrated Zeiss optics. The three cameras feature a 12MP sensor, together with with a 24mm, f/1.7 lens with a 82-degree field of view, a 70mm f/2.4 lens with a 34-degree field of view and a 16mm f/2.2 lens with a 124-degree field of view. Also included is 3D time-of-flight sensor for enhanced zoom, while the front has an 8MP selfie camera with a f/2.0 lens with an 84-degree field of view.

Huawei Intros MatePad Pro 5G

Huawei had a tablet announcement in store for MWC 2020, but since the Barcelona event is cancelled it just had to do it the regular way-- the MatePad Pro 5G, a self-explanatory 5G update of the iPad Pro-style MatePad Pro.

Announced last year for the Chinese market, the MatePad Pro is a high-end Android tablet. It features a 10.8-inch 16:10 aspect ratio AMOLED touchscreen complete with a punch hole for an 8MP front-facing camera. Display resolution clocks at 2560 x 1600, and Huawei claims it has a screen-to-body ratio of no less than 90%. The display is also allows for pen input, specifically through the (not included) M-Pencil stylus.
