What's Up at Euroset?

PDFPrintE-mail

EvrosetEuroset, Russia's largest mobile phone retailer with 5150 outlets and 23% market share, has no president (nor financial director) after Aleksey Chujkin did not have his contract renewed. Discussions are currently underway with AFK Sistema and VimpelCom (Beeline brand) who may buy a stake in the retailer.

Evroset ChairmanEuroset, a $5 billion company, sold 12.6 million handsets in 2007 at an average price of $201, or 6.1% more than in 2006.

Euroset has also been looking for a financial director since last month.  The job of the individual chosen for that position is expected to establish private equity deals and an IPO. Presumably Chairman and Founder Evgeniy Chichvarkin is minding the store.

Euroset earlier this year launched its own SIP-telephony competition to Skype for Russia.

Mobile Industry Rolls Out the LiMo

PDFPrintE-mail

LiMo Foundation, a global consortium  (let’s just say you won’t find Microsoft or Nokia on this list), launched the first globally competitive Linux-based software platform for mobile handsets in March—together with public availability of the application programming interface (API) specs.

LiMo’s initial Founder members—Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone—have been joined by others so now there’s 40+ members..

Operators have a vested interest to create their own platform so NTT DoCoMo, Verizon, Orange, and Vodafone are part of the club: already LiMo operators hold half a billion subscriber customers.

Third-party developers can use LiMo’s API specifications—available on the web site—to build new apps for next-gen consumer experiences. Middleware components for the LiMo Platform can be implemented in either C or C++ programming languages.

The LiMo Foundation is open to all vendors and service providers in the mobile communications marketplace, including device manufacturers, operators, chipset manufacturers, independent software vendors, integrators and third-party developers.

Sergei YushchenkoThe privately owned St. Petersburg-based chain is holding a tender for the sale of a controlling stake. Any buyer is in for a ride if you have been following the shenanigans of the Lenta owners.
