iSuppli: Samsung Leads "Dismal" LCD TV Q1

PDFPrintE-mail

The global Q1 2012 LCD TV market remains virtually flat with a -0.4% Y-o-Y decline as only Samsung and LG shipments manage to grow despite weak market conditions, IHS iSuppli reports.

Total Q1 2012 shipments total 44.4 million units-- a -35% Q-o-Q decline from 68.7m in Q1 2011, an unusually sharp post-holiday season drop. The analyst attributes such a decline to a number of factors, chiefly weak consumer demand, oversupply going into the end of 2011 and a few major brands repositioning loss-making TV divisions.

LCD TV revenue decline for the period is equally sharp-- -32% Q-o-Q, due to heavy discounts in the face of "tentative" consumer spending. LCD revenues account for 87% of the total TV revenues according to iSuppli.

Samsung is the top Q1 2012 vendor (19% market share), with shipments reaching 8.2m units with 6% Y-o-Y growth through competitive pricing, global reach and internal supply chain control.

LG comes 2nd, with 2% Y-o-Y growth. Shipments total 5.8m with 11% market share. Following are Sony, Toshiba and Sharp-- 3 companies trying to hold back further fallout from money-losing TV divisions.

The Shrinking iPhone 5 Connector?

PDFPrintE-mail

Will Apple accessory sellers get an additional revenue boost through the iPhone 5? According to Reuters the iPhone 5 will carry a new, smaller version of the now-ubiquitous Apple dock connector.

small iphone connectorTwo anonymous sources of the "familiar with the matter" variety say the iPhone 5 will ship with a 19-pin connector instead of the proprietary 30-pin port, in order to "make room for the earphone moving the bottom."

The 30-pin Apple port might be something of an icon, but it also takes space-- being 21mm wide, it is much larger than the likes of microUSB, which offers more power in less space.

The change might annoy the Apple faithful, but it also means extra business in the shape of a whole new iDevice accessory ecosystem. Canalys remarks a change in connector dock "represents an opportunity for accessory vendors."

Chinese accessory makers are already making iPhone cases fitting the supposed new design, complete with earphone socket on the bottom and a "guarantee" of correct dimensions.

Rumours on smaller connector docks are nothing new-- back in May 2012 9to5Mac.com presented photos of "next-gen metal iPhone backs," also with a smaller connector device and bottom earphone socket... as well as what looks like a, different, taller display.

We will know what the new iPhone looks like once Apple actually reveals the thing (probably?) around October 2012.

Beats Buys Back... Beats

PDFPrintE-mail

Back in 2011 HTC bought a 51% stake (worth $309 million) in high-end headphone maker Beats Electronics. Now Beats buys back 25% of the company from HTC in a move the 2 companies describe as a "realignment."

HTC BeatsThe buy-back apparently "provides  Beats with more flexibility for global expansion while maintaining HTC's major stake and commercial exclusivity in mobile."

Why did HTC even buy a headphone maker to begin with? The reason lies in the statement above-- the (still exclusive) use of Beats technology, a means for HTC to distinguish itself in a crowded mobile market.

Beats is best known for its partnership with rapper/music producer Dr. Dre, as well as for Monster's role as maker and exclusive distributor. It recently purchased music streaming service MOG.

Will HTC still get access to Beats-powered music-as-a-service?

Samsung Buys CSR Mobile Technology

PDFPrintE-mail

Samsung buys the mobile connectivity and location technology division of British chipmaker CSR for $310 million, in a bid to strengthen both smartphone and patent portfolio.

Samsung"By leveraging CSR's R&D capability, Samsung will strengthen its application processor platform and solidify its position as a leading semiconductor solutions provider," Samsung says.

CSR tells Reuters it was "losing ground" in smartphones to bigger rivals (such as Qualcomm) despite a selection of "cutting edge" Bluetooth, wifi and location technologies. Thus CSR prefers to concentrate on making TV and audio equipment processors for the likes of Sennheiser and Beats by Dre.

On the other hand Samsung wants to strengthen its smartphone business while owning more ever-important patents. With the CSR purchase Samsung gets WW royalty-free license of all handset CSR IP and 21 US patents.
