Nvidia Goes for Gaming at CES

PDFPrintE-mail

The Playstation Vita and Nintendo 3DS might have to watch out-- Nvidia reveals Project Shield at CES 2013, a handheld console handling both Android and PC games.

nvidia shieldProject Shield looks like an Xbox controller and is powered by the newly announced Tegra 4 processor. It supposedly handles console-quality games, outputs 4K video via HDMI to external displays and even provides "deep, rich audio" through a bass reflex tuned port system.

The clamshell integrated display is a 5-inch 294 dpi multitouch number with 1280x720 resolution.

Android is the OS of choice, allowing users to access software from both Google Play and the Nvidia TegraZone app stores. Interestingly the console acts as a wireless game reciever once paired with PCs carrying GeForce GTX 650 or higher GPUs, allowing users to play games from their Steam libraries.

Nvidia gives no pricing details for the new details but does say it will be available sometime during Q2 2012, at least in the US and Canada. Early CES 2013 impressions are positive enough-- but is the world ready for another handheld console?

Tegra Enters 4th Generation

PDFPrintE-mail

Nvidia announces its latest generation mobile processor at CES 2013-- the Tegra 4. The company claims it is the fastest yet, with "record-setting performance and battery life."

Tegra 4The Tegra 4 retains the 4-plus-1 setup of the Tegra 3 while using new architecture with 72 GPU cores and, rumours insist, a 28nm manufacturing process (up from 40nm for the Tegra 3).

The CPU inside is the quad-core ARM Cortex A-15.

Nvidia promises not only superior power consumption (up to 45% less than the previous chip) but also advanced mobile high-dynamic range (HDR) photography and video capabilities, demoed at the show by CEO Jen-Hsun Huang on an unnamed Windows RT tablet.

Global 4G LTE voice and data support comes through an optional chipset, the 5th generation Nvidia Icera i500.

Nvidia gives no release date for the Tegra 4, which also resides in the company's newly revealed Project Shield handheld gaming device.

Cisco to Drop Home Networking?

PDFPrintE-mail

Bloomberg reports Cisco plans to drop its home networking business-- "people with knowledge of the situation" say the company has Barclays looking for a willing Linksys buyer.

LinksysThe Linksys brand covers routers, gateways, range extenders and Powerline adapters.

Cisco bought the company back in 2003 for $500 million-- but will probably "fetch much less" than that now due to its being a "mature consumer business with low margins."

Potential buyers include TV makers looking for a recognisable brand and technology Bloomberg sources say.

Neither Cisco or Barclays have comment on the news story as yet, but such a sale might not come as much of a surprise-- after all the current Cisco strategy is to completely exit consumer business in favour of enterprise software and technology business. You might remember the 2011 killing of the Flip division (without even consideration of sale), just 2 years after the $590m purchase of the then-popular low-cost camera maker.

Other Cisco consumer business includes the Scientific Atlanta STB unit and paid-TV software maker NDS Group. Will the networking giant sell off those as well?
